Football fans wait all year for the big game, and you can tell by the commercials, the displays at the grocery store, and the football-themed dips and snacks flooding your Instagram that the day is almost here. Even if you don’t know the first thing about football, chances are you’re aware that it’s coming.
Not a football person? That’s okay—a lot of people tune in to the big game even if that’s the only sporting event they watch all year. Whether you like football or not, there are plenty of other fun things to enjoy about the biggest game of the year.
Here are a few things to look forward to.
Let’s face it, football parties really are all about the food, right? It’s a time to have fun, let loose, and enjoy all the food.
Scroll through your favorite Pinterest boards or food bloggers’ Instagram feeds for inspiration. Or, maybe you have a favorite recipe for a crowd that you could adapt to a football theme. Not sure? You can’t go wrong with a big charcuterie board to snack on throughout the game.
Here are some of our favorite game day recipes to get you started.
The sky’s the limit with snacks, and you can also sneak in some healthy options, like a veggie or fruit tray, bean dip, or healthy proteins. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some goodies, but balance is always a good idea.
Laugh at the Commercials
Companies spend millions of dollars just for the game day ad spot, and they spend millions more on ad production. To make it all worth it, they have to bring their A-game, and most of the time, they come through.
Lately, game day commercials have been a mix of hilarious, nostalgic, emotional—you never know what angle a company is going to take. They’ll provide great conversation starters in a large group if nothing else!
Game day commercials often make their way into pop culture in the days, weeks, even years or decades that follow. At minimum, there are sure to be memes, commentary, and discussions about them at the office, online, and on the news. If you want to feel like you’re in the know, watch the commercials!
Get Lost in the Halftime Show
The halftime show is always something to be anticipated. Year after year, it seems like there’s something big to talk about, whether it’s an “oops” or the show was so spectacular that you keep watching replays on YouTube.
As with the commercials, these 13-minute productions are high-budget and the artists pull out all the stops for their big moment. The best part? You never know who else might pop in as a surprise performer. The halftime show cuts no corners, and it’s always worth a watch.
Even if you don’t like or understand football, joining a football square can make it more enjoyable. All you have to know is the score at the end of each quarter and the final score. In addition, some pools may have additional options to win from the coin toss or other factors.
If you don’t understand the game, you can always ask for the score to keep tabs on your chances of winning. Even if you don’t win, it certainly makes the game more exciting with the possibility of winning.
If you haven’t hopped in football squares yet, find one at your office, with neighbors, or start your own! You could even start one at your own party and make it interesting for everyone there.
Time with Friends
Let’s not forget, any excuse to gather is time with friends! You can chat, watch football, eat, sip, and laugh. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Whether you’re with a group of friends you see often or you only get together a couple of times a year, it’s a night to have fun and let loose while enjoying all the entertainment, even if you don’t care about football.
The big game is about football, but there’s more than just the sport to love about it too. So even if you don’t care to watch men throw a football around or could care less who wins, there are many reasons to love and enjoy the game—and everything that comes with it.
If you’re hosting, make sure to have plenty of food and fun for your friends, and if you’re a guest, bring the foods you love and get ready to have a great time with the commercials, halftime show, friends, and of course, the yummy food!
