Can eating more of this delicious food stop or reverse dementia? New research suggests a diet rich in mushrooms may help starve off dementia. A study found in the January edition of the Journal of Medicinal Food discovered 11 kinds of mushrooms that increased the brain’s gray matter by increasing a chemical called “nerve growth factor”, or NGF.

The findings suggest that mushrooms “may fulfill a preventative function against the development of Alzheimer’s disease.”

“Regular consumption of mushrooms may reduce or delay development of age-related neurodegeneration,” Professor Vikineswary Sabaratnam of Malaya University in Kuala Lumpur concluded in the study. Is mushroom coffee the next superfood trend?

Professor Sabaratnam Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George’s, University of London stated “It’s very likely a dietary intake of mushroom or mushroom-based extracts might have beneficial effects on human health and improve brain function.”

For example a mushroom called, H. erinaceus, also called the Lion’s Mane, was discovered to increase mild cognitive impairment with 50 to 80-year-olds who have dementia. Another mushroom called Cordyceps was found to have anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help stop memory loss by preventing neuronal cell death.
