The Calorie Myth
Recent Reuters article showed that 6 years after The Biggest Loser, The contestants’ metabolism was not only significantly slower, but also their weight was BACK UP – A vicious cycle that showed that calories in and calories out is not working long term.
How many of you eat less and less calories and still gain weight- even with more exercise???
You see, we have all been trained to think that we can lose weight by using the “calories in, calories out” method – burning more calories than we eat. However, over the past few decades this method has been proven not to work. With the obesity rates continuing to rise people still stand by this theory as the best way to fight obesity.
The biggest lie is that all calories are created equal. It is important to recognize the types of food we are eating, not just the number of calories we intake and how those calories affect our insulin and hormone levels. Food doesn’t just contain calories, it contains information that affects our body chemistry and hormones. Each food source you eat does something different to your body – good or bad. 700 calories of soda are going to affect your body in a dramatically different way than 700 calories of broccoli.
High-quality calories come from foods that are rich in good quality, fat, protein, macro nutrients and high in fiber, like broccoli, leafy greens, high quality proteins, avocados, and nuts. They fill our bodies up quickly and keep us full for a long time. Processed foods and sugary foods aren’t as nutritionally satisfying, and can lead to overeating.
The other calorie myth is that cutting calories will help lose weight. If you cut down on your calorie intake but continue to eat poor quality foods, your body will continue to store fat (you will be a fat building machine).
The CRAZY thing is that many people that consume less than 1,000 calories a day continue to gain weight because their metabolism slows down and their bodies burn glucose rather than fat.
Our point is that we need to stop the madness of calorie counting / keeping a calorie journal, and focus on the right foods to eat.
