A little Easter history.

Easter is part of an ancient holiday that existed as a celebration of Spring. In AD 595, Pope Gregory sent 40 monks to England to convert the pagan inhabitants to Christianity. They were led by Augustine, who was instructed to allow the pagan festivals to remain but impose Christian ceremonies on them. Early Christians connected the holiday to the resurrection of Christ but kept the name Easter, after the goddess Eostre, that was already ingrained in the culture.
