Molecular Oral Microbiology published a study in 2013 that examined the efficacy of Erythritol and Xylitol for inhibiting the growth of dental caries. Both were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the development and growth of Streptococcus gordonii and Porphyromonas gingivalis. The study found Erythritol to be the most effective in the suppression of pathogens and biofilm formation. Another study published in Caries Research in 2014 evaluated over 400 first and second graders consuming four candies three times per day. These candies were sweetened with Erythritol and Xylitol. This was a double-blind, randomized, controlled prospective clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of these candies in the prevention of enamel and dentin caries. The children were evaluated over a three-year period. The study found that the time for enamel/dentin caries to develop were significantly longer in the Erythritol group compared to the Xylitol groups.

Erythritol May Be a Sweet Antioxidant

The natural sweetener erythritol does not appear to carry the adverse effects associated with other low and non-caloric natural and artificial sweeteners and may actually have antioxidant potential. A Brief History of Erythritol:

Erythritiol was discovered in 1848 by British chemist John Stenhouse. It occurs naturally in fruits and fermented foods. It is produced from glucose by fermentation with nutritional yeast and It is 60–70% as sweet as table sugar. It is non-caloric, does not affect blood sugar and does not cause tooth decay. It is partially absorbed by the body, excreted in urine and feces. It does not cause gastric side effects like other sugar alcohols because of its unique digestion pathway. In the body, most erythritol is absorbed into the bloodstream in the small intestine and then excreted unchanged in the urine. About 10% enters the colon. Because 90% of erythritol is absorbed before it enters the large intestine, it does not cause laxative effects, as are often experienced after consumption of other sugar alcohols (such as xylitol and maltitol)
